Importing Bookwork (Canvas)

Branimi can track student coursework completion by importing gradebook exports from Canvas LMS. This shows how far each student has progressed through their theory units alongside their hours progress.

Before You Import

Student emails must be entered first. The Canvas CSV matches students by their email address (the "SIS Login ID" column in Canvas). If a student doesn't have an email entered in Branimi, their bookwork data won't be matched.

To enter emails: Go to StudentsEdit on each student → enter their email → Save.

How to Export from Canvas

  1. Log into Canvas LMS

  2. Go to the Gradebook

  3. Export the gradebook as a CSV file

  4. Save the file to your computer

How to Import into Branimi

  1. Click Bookwork in the sidebar (under Administration)

  2. Click the upload area or drag and drop the Canvas CSV file

  3. Branimi processes the file and shows:

    • Total rows found in the CSV

    • Matched — Students whose email matched a Branimi record

    • Unmatched — Students in the CSV who couldn't be matched (with their email addresses listed so you can fix them)

  4. Matched students' bookwork data is now visible across the system

Where Bookwork Data Appears

After a successful import, bookwork progress shows up in several places:

  • Dashboard — A teal/green bookwork bar appears below each student's hours bar, with a completion percentage on the right

  • Student Detail Page — Bookwork Completion card with grade, assignment count, and a full unit-by-unit breakdown table

  • Kiosk — When a student clocks in, their bookwork progress bar appears below their hours bar on the kiosk screen

Re-importing

You can upload a new Canvas CSV at any time. The new data replaces the previous import — it doesn't add to it. This means you can re-import weekly or as often as you like to keep bookwork data current.

Import History

Below the upload area, a table shows past imports with match/unmatched counts. This helps you track when data was last updated.

Troubleshooting

"0 matched" after import:

  • Check that student emails are entered in Branimi

  • Make sure the emails in Branimi match the "SIS Login ID" column in the Canvas CSV (case doesn't matter)

Some students matched, others didn't:

  • The unmatched email list tells you exactly which students weren't found

  • Enter or correct those emails in Branimi, then re-import

Bookwork bars not showing on Dashboard:

  • Bookwork bars only appear when data exists. If you just imported, refresh the page.
